Inexpensive drills are replaced when worn, but expensive drills are reconditioned by two grinding operations, resharpening and thinning. Resharpening grinds away drill metal until the specified point geometry is restored, but the web of the shortened drill is wider than the original one if web increases from the point to the shank.
The problem is that if I try bringing the drill up to the wheel from the attachment mount, it's not even close to touching the wheel. The angle of attack from the web-thinning attachment is so acute that I have to unclamp the drill and move it out in the bushing/collet by about 1/2" to be able to reach the wheel.
In this document you'll review drill grinding procedures and web thinning diagrams. Drill Grinding Procedures - Web Thinning - Wisc-Online OER This website uses cookies to ensure you get the best experience on our website.
HSS drills are ground with CBN grinding discs and VHM drills with diamond grinding discs. Through the adjustable point angle from 90° - 140° and the adjustable point thinning equipment, these models can be used universally for different drill types. Easy handling and their efficiency make this machine a real winner in the field of drill grinding.
The web thickness of a drill increases as the drill is re-sharpened. If the drills are not too badly worn when they come to the cutter grind department for resharpening, you can generally get 3 or 4 resharpenings to each thinning operation. Proper web thinning will reduce the amount of torque required for the drilling job.

Many drill producers grind away as much of this area as possible. The rea-son they do this is to reduce thrust and improve penetration rates. The process, called web thinning, also aids in tool life and hole quality. There are limits to how thin the web can be, though. As an analogy, think about driving nails into a piece of soft

Thinning is an important method for improving drill performance by alleviating the problem of large negative rake angle distribution along the cutting and chisel edges. This paper has presented a method for accurate production of drill thinning for 2-flute twist drills based on the pose of the grinding wheel.
The disadvantage of this type of drill is that the shape does not return to its original shape unless it is ground very hard when regrinding. Type XR. This type of drill is often used in cemented carbide drills, and is an X-thinning type with a small R-thinning only at the contact point between the thinning blade and the cutting edge.
